Open champion Padraig Harrington will defend his title at Royal Birkdale in July. His entry brings to five the number of Open winners who have already signed up for this year's Championship. He will be joined in the field by Paul Lawrie and Sandy Lyle of Scotland, Ernie Els from South Africa and US tour player Justin Leonard. Harrington won in dramatic form at Carnoustie last year after dropping two shots on the 72nd hole and getting his hands on the Claret Jug only after a four-hole play-off against Sergio Garcia, who had been long-time leader of the Championship. "My goal was always to win more than one major," he said in the aftermath of the first home victory since Lawrie captured the title, also at Carnoustie, in 1999. "If I ever crossed the threshold to win one, I wouldn't feel like that was the end of my road. I'll try to win another, rather than feeling that this was the pinnacle. I'm going to celebrate like it's the pinnacle, but I've got other goals now to move on with."
