Birkdale Information
Cameras
Cameras are not permitted on Championship days.
Mobile Phones
Mobile phones can distract players and will not be permitted within the paygates. Please do not bring your phone to the course. You will not be permitted access to the course with a mobile in your possession.
Step Ladders
Step ladders or similar are not permitted within the paygates and should not be brought to the course.
Pets
No pets are allowed at the course and we respectfully suggest that you do not leave your pet in the car.
Safety

Please be reminded that under wet conditions the ground may become slippery and appropriate footwear should be worn. Spectators should wear sun protection and drink plenty of fluids in hot and sunny conditions.
Inclement Weather
In the event of inclement weather, it may be necessary to evacuate the grandstands. Please observe the instructions of marshals.

The Open Championship is to return to Royal Birkdale
from July 17-20, 2008. It will be the ninth Championship to be played
over the Lancashire course where Peter Thomson won the first and last
of his five Open titles and where Arnold Palmer's victory in 1961
marked the virtual re-birth of golf's oldest championship.

Visitors to Royal Birkdale are assured a warm
welcome. The Green Keeping staff is led by Chris Whittle, the Head
Green Keeper, who joined the club in 1994 having supervised the Muirfield
links for six years.
Southport Tourism
The
Sefton Coast is also an important visitor destination with popular
bathing beaches, open countryside, and the seaside resort of Southport.The
miles of sandy beach (you'll need your binoculars to see the sea when
the tides out!) is crowned by a magnificent promenade which is now
dotted with sculptures which form part of the seawall display |
Travel By Road To Birkdale
The club is one and half miles
south of Southport town centre on the A565 - Waterloo Road between
Southport and Ainsdale. Drivers approaching from the North should
use the M6, exit at Junction 29, Leyland, to the A582, A59 and A565.
Drivers from the South, via the M6, M62, M57 and A5147. Traffic from
Central Lancashire should use the M58, exit at Junction 3, Rainford,
to the A570. Traffic from Wales and the Wirral should use the M53,
Queensway Tunnel to the A565.
Travel By Rail To Birkdale
The nearest railway station is Hillside on the
Liverpool to Southport line. Hillside Station on the Merseyrail
Northern Line is 2 minutes walk from the golf course entrance. Trains

Travel By Air To Birkdale

The nearest airports are Manchester and Liverpool

The beautiful Sefton
Coast, which includes the coastal towns of Formby and Southport,
is one of the largest areas of undeveloped dune systems in England.
It's crammed with sandy beaches, tidal estuaries, coastal marshes,
pine woodlands, heath land and scrub, peat moss lands and also man-made
wetlands. All this makes it prime bird-watching territory! Other
activities to interest families and friends are sailing, fishing,
windsurfing or just enjoying the magnificent sands across Southport.
